Major Concepts• Naming Elements- What to capitalize, how elements are named
• Finding Atomic Number, Atomic Mass, Neutron Number, and Mass Number- How to find the different aspects of an element by looking at a periodic table and doing a little math • Dalton's Atomic Theory- Learn the 5 parts of Dalton's Theory • Structure of Atoms (Atomic Models) • Isotopes- Recognizing the difference in neutrons among the same element • Diatomic Molecules- Learn how some atoms of the same element can form a bond • Allotropes- Sometimes, elements don't have just one form • Ions (Naming an Ionic Compound) |
Example Problems1. A molecule contains three phosphorus atoms and four oxygen atoms. Write the compound.
Answer: P3O4 2. Write the compound for these elements: Si-4 C2 Answer: CSi2 (Remember, name the positive charge first and the negative charge second!) 3. What element has 14 protons? Answer: Silicon 4. If Oxygen has 8 protons and 8 neutrons, what is its mass number? Answer: 16 5. What is the mass number of Bromine? Answer: 80 Remember: Capitalize the first letter of an element symbol!
